I need help with my kitchen aid ice cream maker attachment.

I can't swim. I can neither sing nor dance. I don't own a digital camera or any camera for that matter because I can't take decent photos even if my life depended on it. I'm no good at public speaking.

Knowing that I can't do any of the above mentioned stuffs don't bother me that much. What bothers me is that I can't attach the kitchen aid ice cream maker (model KICAOWH) that my uncle gave me (whoops! i meant us) to my 5 qt artisan mixer (model 5KSM150).

I can't attach the drive assembly to my mixer because of a small circular metal piece located just below the motor head and right above the area where we attach the dough hook and balloon whisk and the paddle/beater (whatever it's called).

According to Kitchenaid, the ice cream maker attachment can fit any stand mixer model. Any stand mixer except mine?????
I tried sending an email to Kitchenaid's customer service center but I can't access their website!!! Arghhhh!!!!

I don't want my dreams of making delicious, homemade ice cream melt away....
Okay now that line was cheesy!
Seriously though, I need your help beautiful people with kitchen aid mixers and ice cream maker attachments.

I was looking for comments about the quality of the ice cream made and found your delema. Did you get it fiqured out?

marica said...

@SugarChef: Yes.I was able to access the kitchen aid website and they said that the ice cream maker that my uncle purchased in the US is meant only for US kitchen aid stand mixers and that I have to purchase their Asian/European (ice cream maker) model. *sigh*
I wish they'd take down the "compatible with any kitchen aid stand mixer" part of their ad. Very misleading!

Anonymous said...

I have exactly the same problem. I agree - very misleading.

Anonymous said...

So what did you end up doing? I have exactly the same problem, and we threw away all the packaging and receipts in the States when we were leaving. We live in Europe and won't be back for several months, maybe year.

Anonymous said...

me too. borrowed a friends attachment which didn't fit my 220v model.

Which model did you end up getting?

Anonymous said...

Hi,
I had the same problem bought my ice cream maker in the usa(living in sweden). I succeded in ordering a mew drive assy from electrolux home that made the trick. it's called drive assy 9709419 and cost me like 15$.

Hi,
I found several European vendors who carry this item. They all sell it for around 40 Euros.
Hope this helps,

We have the same mier, that was bought in the US, AND the ice cream mixer attachment we bought IN THE US doesnt fit. It is because of the same small metal piece. Believe it or not, we used an electric drill to file down the piece of plastic on the attachment, and stuck it on. We are enjoying the ice cream now! It was an easy fix..I hope it works for you as well!

Anonymous said...

Did anyone find the European drive assembly, 9709419 or 9709414, for less than €40?

Anonymous said...

You have to buy the drive assembly and the dasher for the models not made in America. If you only purchase drive assembly apparently the dasher is shorter on Amercian model so won't fit perfectly. I have just had to order both items and they will cost me approximately $80AUD.

Anonymous said...

Why would the dasher be different too? Drawings of them seem to be identical… any references? All I wanted is an URI (a web address) to be able to buy the European drive assembly at a decent price, something under US$50.

Anonymous said...

It sadly is shorter. I have ordered and should get mine in next week & I will let you know. I contacted Australian distributor to purchase. Not sure of European distributor.

Nina said...

Hi,
Don't know if you check your old post, but I have the same problem as you. I purchased the icecream attachment from the US, and it doesn't fit my KitchenAid. Where did you source the compatible attachments from? Did you need a new dasher too? I'm very angry that all their literature says it's compatible with any model. Unbelievable!
Thanks

Anonymous said...

I just got my European drive assembly from http://www.bellparts.com/product/4726660/, it fits nicely. Hope to try it soon.

Anonymous said...

Nina, you need to purchase the drive assembly and the dasher as they are both different parts to the American model. I was so annoyed also! Ended up costing me $92AUD to get the two parts. I ordered them through Australian distributor. Now I have American parts that are of no use but you do need both parts otherwise the dasher is too short and won't mix icer cream properly.

We had the same problem: an European kitchenaid but American ice maker . We have think that 40 euros for a so small part, it was very expensive to pay! Then my husband decided to cut a piece of the plastic part of the ice maker: and that works! We are in our tenth bakery of ice creams there!

Anonymous said...

Tested. I have the European KitchenAid Artisan, but the US ice cream maker. I had to buy the European drive assembly, but the US dasher worked just fine with the European drive assembly. I do not know what problem ‘Anonymous’ had…

"...we used an electric drill to file down the piece of plastic on the attachment, and stuck it on..."

"...Then my husband decided to cut a piece of the plastic part of the ice maker: and that works!"

Thanks for useful tips!

A bit embarrassing for a "global" brand to get stuck in regional market "segmentation". Wonder what they teach in MBA classes about "customized" products :)

While I can understand drilling or filing are more ecological, I decided not to risk and just bought ðe European drive assembly. Worked just fine wiþ ðe European mixer and US ice cream maker dasher. Have already half a dozen batches of ice cream, frozen yoghourt and sorbet, no ißues yet.

Hey! If you login to your facebook account and go to the following address, it seems that kitchen aid is providing its international users with the necessary adaptor for the drive assembly...the only catch is, it is best if you provide a US address where they can send it to...

I have a spare dasher and drive assembly. US model though but if anyone wants it they are welcome to have free of charge but just cover the postage as it would be coming from Australia. I bought the US model and then had to buy the spare parts so US parts are no good to me now. Just post a comment on here if you are keen and I will check from time to time. Dee

Hi Dee,
I might be interested. I am a little confused. My ice cream maker is currently enroute to me in Oz from the US, I have since discovered that it won't fit my Aussie model. Would swapping the drive assembly work for this? and also would the flat beater, dough hook etc still work ok with the different drive assembly?
Thanks for you help!

Anonymous said...

David, yes, I þink we already mentioned ðat ðe drive assembly is enough. And ðat no oðer acceßory is affected.

Hi there, I also have the same issue with kitchen aid in australia (i buy the ice cream maker from amazon US). I've read the comments about the modifications made to fix problem, but I don't understand. Do you remove the ring by taking the pin under it out? Or do you leave the ring and just modify the plastic piece. Would love some help please. Just got it and I can't wait to use it!!!!

thanks

Andrea

Hi Andrea,

first remove the silver ring, do this by using a plastic or wooden item, so as not to damage the ring or thepainwork on your machine. Once off tap out the small pin holding the planetary drive shaft, then remove the planetary cover. Once off remove the clip ring that holds the gear in place - you need a clipring tool to do this. then slide off the gear, then remove the pin underneath, and the washer. Now you can remove the shaft completely. Next remove the second clipring just above the spring. Now you can slide the spring off and the collar that is the root cause of all this hassle! Now purchase a washer that is 13mm internal diameterr, and with an outer .diameter of no more than 20mm. Slide this on to the shaft where the collar was, replace the spring, and the clipring. Now insert the shaft back into the planetary cover, replace the washer, the pin, and the gear. Put theplanetary assembly back onto the main body of the machine, and replace the pin in the central drive shaft. Finally, put the silver ring back, andpresto! you havethe US version! Now your ice cream maker should work with the Aussie model.

Anonymous said...

Isn’t it much easier to just buy the drive assembly?

Anonymous said...

David, thank you so much for your detailed instructions. It took my husband about a week to get to doing it for me. However during the week i went back onto amazon and had a look on the page for the kitchenaid ice cream bowl, and right down the bottom of the page there are customer discussions etc. There was one comment about how to remove the pin quite easily with vise grips without damaging the machine. We tried that because it was the easier option for my husband and I've already made two batches of ice cream since the weekend.
Thanks anyway for your help.

Andrea

David, if you still want the American dasher & drive assembly I am happy to post to you. You can mail me an Australia Post pre-paid satchel and I can post it out to you. It is sitting in a drawer and of no use to me. You can message me at dcmckay@gmx.com if you would like it.

I currently have this problem that i bought the kitchen aid head lift mixer in Thailand (which is the same model as European and Australian ones) and US ice cream maker. I got no help from Kitchen Aid USA customer service nor a distributor in Thailand. The US customer service said sorry we cannot help you as the device alrady left USA and Thai distributor said sorry we cannot help you as you didn't buy from us..................it seem like I bought sth illigal!! I still don't know how to fix this problem. Shuold I buy another set of the ice cream maker device or try to find a proper devide to pull the pin off or buy new dasher from USA amazon and have it shipped to Thailand which will cost of a fotune T_T

Thanks so much! We modified ours (New Zealand one) with a washer and it is working great.

Anonymous said...

Thanks David. Followed your instructions and we now have a machine that works with our US ice cream maker (purchased online for ~$90 inc shipping and here in just 5 days!). Total cost of conversion $2 for a pack of washers :-)

The mixer still works with our AU accessories too!

We got stuck on the large silver ring; youtube is our friend. turns out to the the pretty silver ring cover directly under the kitchen aid logo.

Bunnings was fairly limited for a correct sized washer, so we went with a Zenith Spring Washer 1/2", flattened out. Seems to be a perfect fit.

Hi, i have the same problem. I just bought my ice cream maker from US and it does not seem to fit in my kitchen aid mixer. My husband tried to modify the drive assembly but to no use. I am prepared to buy a European assembly drive but i am really confused. Do i also need to buy the dasher. I would be very grateful if anyone could help me out as i am really desperate. Thanks

HI folks...same situation with me, which is really upsetting when you find that out :( But listen guys I wouldn't go and buy the dasher and drive parts - expensive. And I wouldn't try and modify your kitchenaid yourself - you'll void the warranty. Instead, do as I did and contact kitchenaid in the usa (if thats the country you bought the ice cream attachment). There a lady named Cheryl was super helpful and responsed so quickly. Within a couple of weeks she had sent me the european dasher and drive AT NO EXTRA COST. Kitchenaid are aware of this problem and their customer service in resolving it is excellent. To contact Cheryl you can search 'Cheryl Kitchenaid' on facebook or email her at kitchenaid_digital@kitchenaid.com (mark email subject FAO Cheryl).

She is very, very nice so don't take out your frustrations on her...she'll get you sorted out!!

Anonymous said...

I too contacted Cheryl (following the advice from the last post) and she was great. She's sending me the dasher and drive at no cost to my UK address.
Thanks for the advice!

Hi! I'm new to your blog, was searching for info on the KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker and it kinda led me here. Hope it's all sorted now and you're able to enjoy great ice cream! Thanks for the info :-)

Anonymous said...

Thanks Anonymous! I too contacted Cheryl and she was very nice and sent me the new dasher and drive attachments to Australia. I fiddled around first trying to remove the pin but you have to be so careful not to scratch the coating on the metal parts or they will rust. This was a much easier solution. Thank you, I am making coconut gelato right now.

Thank Heavens for the internet and for this blog! I have just contacted Cheryl at KitchenAid and my fingers are crossed.
Thank you for posting this tip, Anonymous!
I have also asked for the contact details of the person responsible for this inexcusable misinformation...

Hi all, I was recently in the USA and purchased my ice cream maker at Macy's, the sales lady was lovely and so helpful and said so many NZers and Aussies purchase attachments there due to the cost here I have been emailing Macy's for the last 3 weeks with no help! It has becme so frustrating I am so glad to find this Blog thread, I have now emailed Cheryl and waiting for a reply so I hope she can help so I can start using. I was also advised NOT to remove the ring guard. Another annoyance is if you look on Macy's web site and in their store the kitchen aid has the ring guard attached!!!...good luck to me :-)

Thank you so much for posting this up. I too got caught in this obstructive and unnecessary attempt at segmenting a market.

If the austrlian Kitchen aid distributors need to resort to this kind of tactic to support their business model, well quite frankly, they're not efficient enough to be in business, tbh.

I have taken the advice of another poster here and have emailed kitchenaid asking if they can help remediate the situation.

I must say that it was really annoying after waiting until he weekend, getting the ice cream ingredients all ready and then finding that I couldn't proceed. Kind of a let down tbh.

Wow, I'm so glad I found this post! I felt so alone! Not only was I infuriated by the fact that the ice cream maker attachment CLEARLY did not fit all models (I seem to have the same one that you have) but I called up the KitchenAid customer service and got an extremely nice, yet not so helpful woman on the phone who advised that I force it...even though the ice cream maker doodad disattached and proceeded to get thrown around my kitchen and practically killed the kitchenaid.

I, too, emailed Cheryl. I sure hope she still works there!!
